Sankar Age: 5 years old Sankar is from a tribal village in Bihar that doesn’t have electricity, hospitals, or schools. Both of his parents are alive and he is an only child. His Hindu parents are farmers; they work the fields for ten hours a day and only make the equivalent of 800 rupees a month (approximately $16 USD). His parents did not take good care of him, which is why he is now at Asha House. Sankar has never been to school. He doesn’t speak Hindi—just a tribal language that is native to his village. He cannot go to school until he learns Hindi, which is the primary language in the local education system. Right now he has no paper work for school. Though Sankar doesn’t speak Hindi, he interacts with the other children at the orphanage well. He is obedient and eats all of the food on his plate at meal times. |
