Rukshana: Age: 2-3 years old: Rukshana isn’t toilet trained yet and gets in trouble by going to the bathroom anywhere in Asha. She is very smart and learns quickly. However, if the staff isn’t nearby, Rukshana will pick on the other children. Rukshana was born into a Muslim family in the Delhi slums. Though her parents live together, her father coerces her mother to work as a prostitute. He says he will leave his wife if she stops, so she has been “working” like this for four years. However, Rukshana’s father, who is almost forty years old, has also married another girl—who is nineteen. Rukshana’s father has a government job and is addicted to alcohol and gambling. He has abused her brother, Shanu, physically, and makes drunken phone calls to Asha House, threatening to withdraw Rukshana and her sisters so they can work as prostitutes as well. Rukshana lives at Asha House with her brother, Shanu, and two sisters, Nazma, and Heena. Prayer Request: For Rukshana’s mother and family.
